An Introduction
During the industrial depression of the late 1930s over 1,000
unemployed miners and ship builders, from the North-East of
England and South Wales, were given the opportunity to join Land
Settlement Associations and begin new lives as market-gardeners.
20 LSAs were set up across England. The largest was Sidlesham,
West Sussex, with 120 smallholdings.
This website explains the background to the LSA nationally, its organisation at a local level and the creation of a heritage trail.
Discover the locations, people and images which bring the heritage trail to life.
Smartphone owners can use our offline trail which provides the trail information using GPS, or you can download and print a copy of the trail leaflet.
If you have links to the LSA, particularly if you have additional information to contribute to the website please send an email.
